Mandatory Thermal Inspections of E Electrical Equipment

The National Fire Protection Agency, OSHA & Insurance Industry                    Change of Thermal Imaging Inspection Protocol                                           2023 NFPA 70B from Recommended to Mandatory

Starting in January of 2004 the National Fire Protection Agency or NFPA which is a non-profit educational organization that all code enforcing agencies adhere too made a significant change in their annual maintenance recommendations.

Specifically NFPA section 70B had previously “recommended” regular thermal imaging inspections of all electrical equipment including panels, motors, compressors, lifts or handling equipment, HVAC equipment and/or manufacturing equipment in commercial business with over 200 amperes of service.

What changed was the recommended status is now “mandatory” and has been adopted by the federal agency on Occupational Safety & Health Agency or OSHA and embraced by the commercial insurance industry since it statically lowers the risk of both fire and personal injury by making it standard operating procedure.

This process has to be performed by a minimum of a certified “Level One Thermographer for Electrical Applications” a federally recognized technician who has the training and equipment to capture accurate readings, interpret anomalies and report back to maintenance personal for appropriate action.

Advanced Inspection Services has both the certification, equipment and expertise to provide the necessary thermal inspections and monitoring protocol outlined in this very important new rule which can provide added safety and reliability to electrically powered equipment in the commercial field.
